Darshans The School
Charity Program |
Education
is greater than gaining knowledge: it is also inculcating
certain values. A truly educated person not only faces
life with courage, but also shoulders a social responsibility.
A holistic education, thus throws challenges aplenty.
The unprivileged child needs food, clothing, shelter,
healthcare, school supplies more than just an education.
CNIS more than lends a helping hand in this regard, with
a mission to emancipate children from the chains of poverty
with health, shelter, social, educational and spiritual
support, hence leading them on to a world of endless possibility
as productive members of the society.
CNIS brought together the above two facets through Koliyoor,
near Vizhinjam; a village adopted by us through 2007 and
sponsoring a fraternity of 30 students of the fishermen
community of Valiyathura, all through 2008.
The nursery school with a strength of 40 had been our
focal point in Koliyoor. Our students visited the nursery
Children’s Day of 2007 with gifts aplenty. Each
of the kids at the nursery was gifted school supplies
including bags, notebooks, stationery packs, lunch boxes,
water bottles and umbrellas. The nursery, itself, was
augmented with plastic chairs, carom boards, skip ropes,
balls and block sets. Further, mentors and wards alike,
surveyed the village. A sumptuous meal was organized and
shared by all present. The day without doubt brought great
happiness to all at the nursery and even more learning
about the core values of social responsibility at CNIS,
for our students.
Onam 2007, again took our wards to Koliyoor. CNItes contributed
generously collecting Rs 40,000 for the Gram Darshan project.
Further, uniforms and Onam kits were furnished for the
nursery kids. In 2008 our students collected Rs 35,000
for the Gram Darshan Charity Drive. 22nd Aug, we had students
from Valiyathura for lunch. School supplies including
bags, stationery, notebooks plus old clothes were presented
to them. Marking Onam celebrations, the whole school went
to Valiyathura on 5th September. Gifts and performances
from our students marked the day, making it a memorable
experience for all present.
Late November 2007 saw the school abuzz with activity.
Our students created fabulous Christmas cards, envelopes,
and paper bags to drive the Charity Programme. The kids’
creativity came to the fore in the cards they made. Ms.
Salini and Ms. Manisha did a wonderful job at the envelopes
and paper bags. Fr. Antony Kakkanad and Fr. Kurien, Manager,
Christ Nagar, CBSE School, Thiruvallam, inaugurated sales.
The kids then donned a sales role, and did a splendid
job with it. The Rs 12,000 collected was used to buy a
TV for the children at the Koliyoor nursery. Same time
of 2008, and we were back at creating and selling exquisite
envelopes, diaries, paper bags and pots. Ms. Manisha and
Ms.Veena co-ordinated the endeavour this time. Fr. Mathews
Chackalackal CMI, Manager, Christ Nagar group of institutions
marked the sales open this time.
The Koliyoor kids paid us at CNIS a visit during Christmas
2007. Christmas 2008 was marked by the visit of the kids
from Valiyathura. Travel arrangements were made by the
school. Our students performed enthusiastically for the
visiting kids and staff, both times. Also watching were
our wards parents, teachers. True to Christmas spirit,
each time, the kids went back happy with Christmas gifts.
Grandparents of CNIS students who graced the occasion
gifted sarees to teachers accompanying the kids from Koliyoor/
Valiyathura.
Grade 6 students at CNIS took the onus of collecting funds
for charity, organizing a food stall at the ICSE School
Annual Day on 9th Feb 2007, chef style, complete with
tall hats and aprons. The perpetual demand for their snacks
kept the students and teachers assisting them, on toes
the entire time. Grade 5 did their bit during a medical
camp arranged on the 25th Feb for children of Koliyoor,
helping with registrations, snacks and entertainment.
Dr. Sarah Kuruvilla, paediatrician at GG Hospital, Trivandrum,
examined the children and helped with requisite medicines
and boosts. The school bus ferried kids, teachers and
parents from Koliyoor to school and back.
Grade 2 stepped up to the task in 2008. Under the guidance
of Ms. Subini, the students collected Rs 1000 for the
Charity Treasure, selling fruits and vegetables. A corpus
of Rs 5000 was donated to the kids at Valiyathura for
a trip to Happyland. Study material was also provided.
The medical camp was back in 2008, this time at Valiyathura
villlage. Dr. Santosh and Dr. Ferdinand of SK Hospital
led the camp, and were ably helped by our volunteers from
grades 5 and 6. CNIS Director, Fr. Josey was also in attendance
helping organize the event. This camp was much appreciated
by the village folks, and would have helped our kids become
medically aware.
Fr .Josey Kollammalil has been inspirational, helping
define and drive the Gram Darshan Programme. We are proud
to be led by such a driving light and look forward to
him guiding us ever often.
This year ( 2009 ) the school is planning to construct
a house for a poor family at Valiyathura, Trivandrum.
If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you
want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness
for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for
a lifetime, help somebody. CNIS is on the constant path
to achieving happiness for a lifetime, Chinese wisdom
style, not only for itself, but also for each student
who passes through our gates, one village at a time.
